Research

Importance

Researching and retention of the information is important for me in my career as retail is forever changing. It is crucial to keep up with profitability from reports and websites as well as exploring new enhancements and news letters. Below are three ways to demonstrate my understanding of research and the citations from where I got my information from.

1) Media Release

According to a media release, Publix’s board of directors announced that the quarterly dividend would be of 9 cents per share (Close-Up Media, Inc., 2022). They also received information that the stock dividend would be payable on August 1 by direct deposit or by mail to the stockholder. As a Publix employee, I did not know that information about the private stock was accessible to the public.

This source is accurate and up to date on a private stock, which is nifty to get in depth information like that about a private sector in the stock market. Only Publix employee can purchase stock. It takes three years of employment to become vested. Therefore, it was quite shocking to learn that they announce information about their private stocks. Good to know though.

2) Forbes Website

Publix was founded in 1930 and currently has roughly 230,000 employees making them the largest employee-owned supermarket chain in the U.S (Publix Super Markets, n.d.). Publix was founded by George W Jenkins and operates 1,288 stores ranging from Florida to Virginian (Publix Super Markets, n.d.). They cover 7 states so far. Another interesting fact is the chairman is still a family member of Mr. Jenkins. The chair is his grandson, Ed Crenshaw (Publix Super Markets, n.d.). Publix also processes its own dairy, bakery, and deli products and they house their own distribution for all its stores (Publix Super Markets, n.d.) Their corporate office and distribution center is in Lakeland, Florida.

This Forbes article was very educational. It gave the company stats, as well as some background information on what is processed within the company and where it comes from. This source was insightful on how many stores there and some background information on the founder and current chairman and their relationship to each other, which is nice to see the family carrying on their grandfather’s business.

3) Publix Website

On the Publix website, they have a short new video out about the bakery of the future (Publix, n.d.). The bakery is going to have fancier tables that display the bread upright and makes shopping easier to see what needs to be filled. It is also going to make the cake cases combine the ready to serve cakes and the decadent cakes. They are also making the pastries and doughnuts self-serve! I also found out that Publix is making some enhancements to the tuition reimbursement program.

Publix.org is a great source to stay in the know in almost every aspect of Publix. It is also how us Publix associates log in to get our schedules and other useful information. It is always good to go right to the source when looking for information that is not fabricated.
